Corp of Engineers South Command Headquarters

The Challenge

The Army Corps of Engineers Campus is located in sunny, hot, and humid Miami, Florida. Their new headquarters, a multi-building campus, had to provide a comfortable work environment for over 250 people with consistent temperatures, adequate lighting, and good ventilation.

The buildings were designed to feature a lot of windows and glass, which added to the difficulty of keeping the inside cool. To further complicate matters, the Army Corps of Engineers campus regularly hosts dignitaries and high profile events, so distractions like high temperatures, poor lighting, or stuffy rooms could undermine their important work.

The Plan

Burgess Services recognized that their primary directive had to be making people comfortable in a hot, humid climate without blasting them with cold air. Therefore, the design of the duct work, the size and capacity of the equipment, and the placement and programming of the temperature controls was paramount to the projects’ success.

Burgess meticulously planned and executed each of these aspects so that every area of the Corps of Engineers new headquarters provided a comfortable, livable workspace for everyone. From cubicles to training rooms to offices, the design and construction was efficient between exhaust and fresh air return. The placement and programming of the temperature controls made consistently comfortable temperatures feasible.

The Results

Burgess Services won the Association of General Contractors (AGC) Southern Region Award for Design Efficiency for the work they performed at the Army Corps of Engineers’ headquarters. Even better, the client is happy to have a comfortable environment that supports and doesn’t distract their employees from their work.
